(Art) The Rule Of Thirds

When taking pictures, there's more to it than just aiming and clicking. One doesn't necessarily have to become a pro or have a high end camera to take great pictures. The start of having better pictures is to have a good composition. Personally I use the Rule Of Thirds.

To do this in practice imagine the whole frame to have two vertical lines and two horizontal lines dividing the whole frame into 9 equal parts. When taking pictures try lining up the subject on the points where the lines intersect. These lines are sometimes visible as guides on some digital cameras or cellphone cameras.

The improvement is often dramatic, but take note that this isn't always the case. Sometimes it's more effective to center the shot. The best way to discover the difference and where to employ this technique is to experiment.

Wikipedia has a great article regarding the Rule of Thirds to get you started. For further reading you can look it up online.
